If you plan to fly, you can take your bicycle as checked luggage. All major airlines in the US require you to put your bike in a hard-shelled case or a cardboard box. Each airline has its own fees for checking bike boxes, depending on the weight and size of the box. Most, but not all, bicycle boxes will incur oversized luggage fee, and many will also require waiting in the “special luggage line”.

Frontier seems to be the most bike-friendly airline to date, as they treat bike boxes as regular luggage, as long as they are less than 100 Lbs. Southwest charges a $50 fee for a bike, but does not charge at all for normal checked baggage. Check your airline for specific regulations and charges surrounding bike boxes.
